Newcomers School Spring Kick-off
Last fall the Soccer Foundation partnered with the Doris Henderson Newcomers School for a new English Immersion Soccer Studies program. Over 40 middle school students are currently enrolled in the program that will run every Wednesday through February. In February, the program will then serve approximately 30 high school students for the remainder of the year. Each Wednesday participants receive snacks afterschool and then work with coaches and volunteers to improve their reading skills. The coaches act as tutors for the first part of the program before children go outside and engage in an English language only soccer training session. The program seeks to enhance children’s understanding of the English language, provide additional physical activity and soccer skill development. Throughout the program the Soccer Foundation provides soccer apparel and other necessary clothing to students in the program. All of these students will transition to their home and school following their year of study at Newcomers School. The English Immersion Soccer Studies program hopes to help with that transition on and off the field.
Here is more information on the Newcomers School:
The Doris Henderson Newcomers School serves recently arrived immigrant and refugee students in grades 3-12 who are novice English speakers. Focused instruction is provided by staff members in English as a Second Language. In addition, content area objectives are integrated into ESL lessons to provide students access to Mathematics, Social Studies, Science, and English Language Arts curriculum. Art, Physical Education, and focused reading intervention are also offered. The staff is committed to helping students adjust to the American school system and culture. Field trips into the community provide students the opportunity to learn about and experience important people and places in their new surroundings. Field trips also build much needed background knowledge for students. Families are important and welcomed partners in the educational process of our students. Adult literacy classes are offered to our families to empower them to progress in their English development. K-12 tutoring and childcare is provided during those sessions.
