Refugee Middle School Recreation Team
Over the years the Foundation has worked to create recreation teams for high school boys and girls. Now that we have so many high school players refereeing, playing on travel teams or coaching we have been able to create teams for younger players. This Fall the NC Fusion Foundation created a middle school boys recreation team that drew players from our Saturday Soccer program. Coaches for the team included two UNC Greensboro graduate students, two former NC Fusion players now attending local colleges and our Foundation Director. It was important to have former Saturday Soccer players return as coaches in the program. These young coaches act as role models for our players and show them the importance of staying in our programs and finishing school.
In addition to working with players to develop their soccer skills, the team focused on helping players develop life skills that will aid them on and off the field. Many of the players are new refugees or immigrants to the United States. This program offers a safe, fun place for players to connect with others and build their self-confidence. Coaches relied on several veteran players to act as translators throughout the season and this further helped to empower young leaders in the community.
